Rebooting in China
I held some notions of what China must be like before I visited and was busy collecting the proof right up until I came across this scene. This image of a photographer and his model was taken in a courtyard directly off Tiananmen Square in China on my second day there.
That man crouched down taking the photograph of the woman could have been me. There was an immediate connection with this stranger that seemed surreal. I’ve conducted shoots like this many times but to see this happening off Tiananmen Square in China didn’t fit with how I envisioned the country or its people. It was a big reboot to the brain for me… once again I was reminded that stereotypes of any kind can taint the way I see things.
