What's love got to do with it?
When I go out on the street I don’t have a specific idea about what I’ll capture with my camera but I do have a strong interest in people and their social interactions with one another. I am also very concerned with authenticity. I want to find the real thing as I’m looking for answers. Fortunately over the years, I’ve found them here and there and my life has been made better because of it.
Robert Frank once said, “It is always the instantaneous reaction to oneself that produces a photograph.” I can really relate to his statement. When I go over my images at the end of a day I always find that the best captures have a lot to do with my personal issues and concerns at the time.
Lately I have been thinking about love. I probably watch the news too much but what I see is that life is very harsh for far too many people. I think that one of the greatest hopes that can be fulfilled in this life is to find love. It is our saving grace.
As I was sifting through my photographs taken at the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California, I came across an image that stood apart from all the others taken that day. In all honesty, I probably photographed this couple because they looked so cute together. When I took the photograph, I didn’t pay much attention to the tattoo and didn’t know what it meant. Later, I found the answer on the internet. In Italian: La Vita e Bella, La Vita e Amore. In English: Life is beautiful, Life is Love.
When I photographed them they were quite immersed in conversation. I had no idea what they were talking about since I do not speak Spanish. I did know they were happy though. I think they were talking about their future. There is something about looking out over the ocean and sensing the immensity of it that lends perspective to your life. I think they were making plans but one can only imagine. Maybe it was about love. I hope so.
